(nsfmg) Gift Guide for Kids

Our kids’ gift guide is equal parts “stuff kids love” and “shit moms won’t hate having in their living spaces.” From open-ended play, to buy-you-time-to-drink-a-hot-coffee, to our top picks for gender fluid kiddos -- this is not your average children’s gift list.

Sarah's Silks Giant Starry Night Playsilk and 4 Wooden Play Clips

Kids these days have really leveled up in the toy department. This Sarah’s Silks fort building kit is based on Waldorf principles, AKA your kids will be able to come up with a million different ways to play with this and you’ll get some time to scroll in peace.

This Black and female-owned small shop handcrafts non-toxic resin letters that reflect Black culture. We’ve got our eyes on the melanin magic resin letter set which organically opens up a dialogue about race with little ones.

If you’re in the market for a bigger ticket item that will last for years of play (and isn’t an eyesore) -- look no further than this climbing triangle from another BIPOC-owned brand we love. Production lead time is about 5-6 weeks so order soon if you want one.

Piccolina’s modern rag dolls were inspired by their Trailblazer tees and other apparel, and highlight powerful women who have done badass things like Frida Kahlo and RBG. We want them all!

Is there anything kids love more than gooey, colorful paint that they can rub all over their bodies? Here’s a hot tip: this prebiotic bath jelly starts out gooey but turns milky in the bath and is chock full of probiotics from spirulina that are gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin. A gift that reduces bath time battles? We’ll take five, please. Use code NSFMG15 for 15% off.

Don’t sleep on tees from Latina, Mom and Queer-owned Vida and Wild because they sell like hotcakes. This ‘Immigrant Made ' tie-dye tee is still available in all sizes and we’re definitely grabbing one for each of our kids.

Ahh, emotional regulation. It’s a term we never really knew about until experiencing toddler emotions. It turns out we could probably all use a little help in this department. This therapist-developed deck of kids affirmations flashcards promotes self-regulation in kids ages 4-7. Our only question is — do they make one for adults, too? Use code NSFMG for 10% off.

Here’s something that doubles as a gift to you for the wee little ones who frankly don’t know what the heck is going on during gift-giving season. Tiny Organics aims to raise adventurous eaters by introducing them to their first 100 flavors (which makes this truly a gift that keeps on giving). We love that it means less time cooking food they probably won’t eat, and more food they will. Use code NSFMGLOVESTINY for 25%.

white rainbow sweater with blue red yellow green

A while back we hosted a conversation about gender neutral clothing (and the serious lack thereof) available at non-bougie price points. Primary came up again and again because their entire site is gender nonconforming. All pieces for all kids! This rainbow sweater caught our eye.

you matter book cover with kid with hijab glasses in wheelchair black

Christian Robinson’s books are not only visually appealing, but whimsical and profound. The message about how we are all interconnected in the book, “You Matter” is one we could all use a refresher on.

Toniebox with a puppy stars sun flowers

Do you remember hanging out in your room with your stereo blasting your favorite CD? Well, now toddlers have their own music player for their generation. The Toniebox is seriously life changing — in that it takes the place of screen time AND guarantees independent play. Just pop a character on top and let your little one listen guilt-free to their favorite stories, songs, and even meditations. Where was this when we were little?

We’d take one of everything from female-founded mini mioche if we could. But if we had to pick a favorite item -- it would have to be this ballet dress that girls and non-binary kiddos alike will for sure want to twirl in. Also, you might need to grab one of these ethically-made organic wool hats, too.

Wordy Toys offers quotidian items in high-quality wood with a variety of languages. This ensalada kit might just even introduce our kids to another seemingly foreign concept: vegetables.

Word on the tween circuit is that mushroom motifs on clothes are in. We get it. These fun little fungi have always been a cultural phenomenon. This gender-neutral organic mushroom sweatshirt gets our vote. Tweens and teens will also love this cozy mushroom blanket for cuddling while they binge on YouTube over break.

If there’s two things that kids love: it’s science that feels like magic and sparkly, shiny things (just ask our glitter-obsessed toddlers). This crystal growing kit allows kids to watch the crystals grow in real time and tbh this Redwood & Saguaro Crystal Growing Kit kiiinda feels like a gift for us, too.

We love a gift that stands the test of time, because, you know, the planet is slowly falling apart in time for our children’s generation. A few of us on Team Mom Group have salt lamps in our little kids’ rooms so we were pumped to hear that salt lamps are on some bigger kids’ wish lists this year, too. My toddler likes to lick ours but I 10/10 would not recommend trying it yourself.

Perusing Urban Outfitters’ website never ceases to be enlightening. Who knew our childhood bedrooms would still be considered so cool? Things really do come full circle and we are here for the return of peace signs and smiley faces in the form of textural throw pillows perfect for a calming corner or a tween’s bed.

We’re pretty sure all of us are raising tiny changemakers because shit right now is not ok. “A is for Activist” is a favorite of ours for introducing the next generation of progressives to get out there and shake things up.
