The Motherly Becoming Mama event is an experiential and informative full-day event for new moms and moms-to-be, exploring all three trimesters of pregnancy—plus postpartum. These events include engaging panels with industry leaders, honest stories from influential moms, and a chance to meet your new mom village IRL.I had the opportunity to speak alongside some great thought leaders in the motherhood community -- Elyse Fox of Sad Girls Club, Diana Spalding of Gathered Birth and Motherly and Rebeka Boruki for a panel discussion about the support we wish we could have had in place as new mothers. It was an opportunity for us each to share the ways in which we found community and support through transition in our respective motherhood journeys.
I spoke about my messy attempts at finding where I “belonged” as a new mom, freshly overcome by the despair of postpartum depression (PPD). I shared how my different mom communities — my formal mom group, my best mom friend, and even the moms I only knew online — saved me from isolation and nearly giving up. There's hardly ever a neat and linear solution to these kinds of challenges. I didn't know the path as I was building it, but I can say that the more scaffolds of support we create for ourselves in times of need and transition -- the better we can see ourselves through to the other side.
